CARIS BASE Editor : S-57 Composer and S-100 : Overview : Portrayal Files

Portrayal Files

You can choose between the S-52, IENC, or INT1 displays by using portrayal (presentation) libraries.

The symbology and colour display in the Display window are determined using a file named portrayalcontrol.xml. This file lists the lookup tables (area, line, and point), symbol files, and colour tables needed to show data.

The default location of portrayalcontrol.xml is C:\Program Files\CARIS\<application>\<version>\system. This can be changed using the Portrayal Control option in the Options dialog box.

Options in this file are listed in the Options dialog box or in the Properties window when a layer is selected. The settings in the Options dialog box apply to all open data. The settings in the Properties window apply to the selected layer only.

Select a setting from either the options or properties list then refresh the display to show data using the symbology and colour options associated with that presentation.1

You can create your own presentation options using custom lookup tables, symbol files, and colour files. If you do this, copy the original folders and files and make changes to the copies, then create a presentation options section in portrayalcontrol.xml.
