Introduction

Portrayals are catalogues of lookup tables, colour tables, symbols and other files that make up drawing instructions for products. Portrayals can be based on

IHO or other chart display standards

custom requirements

Portrayals are accessed in CARIS through the Options dialog box or Properties window.

When a portrayal is selected, the display is refreshed to show features in that portrayal.

Standard IHO portrayals are included in the CARIS installation. Three categories are available, see below.

System portrayals in CARIS are managed through the Portrayal Control File that is included in the installation. This file links lookup tables, colour files and symbol information to a portrayal.

Because portrayals are in XML, custom portrayals can be created.

Custom portrayals can use unique names or use the same names as existing portrayals. A custom portrayal with the same name as an existing one can contain new or additional files. A portrayal that is saved with the same as an existing one overrides the system portrayal.

Custom portrayals must be listed in a user-defined Portrayal Control File and not in the system file.

The user-defined Portrayal Control File works in parallel with the system file uses the same structure and syntax. See below.

A custom Portrayal Control File can be selected from the Files and Folders section of the Options dialog box. Once selected, it can be applied to the application and the portrayals listed in the file are available in CARIS
