Onboard Installation and Setup : Data Sharing

Data Sharing

Using Permissions

If Onboard is installed on a network, permissions for sharing data can be a problem for data access. A common symptom of the problem is that Onboard Control Centre displays the file names of data files, but each job fails.

This problem can exist for both unprocessed data files, and exported products.

The sharing permissions on the operating system of the computer holding the data from the acquisition system may prevent access from the operating system on which Onboard is installed. By default, all of Onboard's service components are running as the Local System account.

Before changing permissions, it is important to check that:

the directories required by Onboard for sharing data have been created, and

the directory (or directories) for sharing data are correctly specified in the process model file.

There are at least two methods of resolving data access problems:

Share the data directories on remote operating systems to everyone. No authentication will be required in this situation, and Onboard will be able to access the directory (or directories). See Public Share Directory for more information.

If one does not already exist, create a user account (for example, OnboardShare) that can be duplicated on each operating system on which there will be directories that Onboard needs to access, and also on the operating system on which Onboard is installed. It will be necessary to set the permissions for all data directories to this OnboardShare account. See Matching User Accounts for more information.

Sharing the data directory to everyone is probably simpler to set up, but the choice may depend on system administration policies and procedures.
