BASE Manager : Introduction : Working with Databases

Working with Databases

The tools in the CARIS1 BASE ManagerTM licensed module let you work with Bathy DataBASE2 ServerTM to create and maintain collections of data in databases that are shared among many users.

To use the database tools in the BASE Manager module, you must be connected to a running database and you must be logged on with a user account with the necessary permissions. Refer to the User Management topic in the CARIS Bathy DataBASE Server documentation for information on user permissions.

Database Layers

When connected to a database, you will see a database connection item under the Data Sources category in the Project window and a database group layer in the Layers window. The database connection item in the Project window will contain a Catalogue item and the feature objects available in that catalogue; this is the catalogue of the database. The database group in the Layers window may contain the following layers:

database filter layers, which are defined by a filter expression to display database objects that match the filter criteria. The filter expression will be specific to one or more feature object acronyms and the attribute values.

a Recycle Bin layer, which contains all database objects that have been deleted, but have not been purged. See Database Recycle Bin for more information.

an Offline layer, which contains all database objects that have been marked offline. See Set Offline/Set Online for more information.

Database filter layers can be defined at the time that the connection is created in the Open Connection wizard. Each layer can be defined to display a single feature object type or numerous object types. A portrayal can also be defined for each layer to control the display of the data. See Add Connection for more information on creating database connections. If additional layers are needed after the connection has been created, or if a layer needs further filtering, the Filter command can be used. This command is accessible from both the Filter property in the Properties window when a database filter layer is selected, or the pop-up menu of the database connection source in the Project window as Add Layer > From Filter. See Filter for more information on filtering data.

By default, the contents of each database layer is displayed when the connection is open. To limit only the display of data, the Display Filter property can be used. All database objects that meet the filter criteria will be made available in the Display window. Processes run on the data in the layer will still be applied to all data, regardless of whether or not it is currently visible in the Display window.

When the database layers are selected, properties for the current layer are displayed in the Properties window. These properties control the display of the data in each layer. If a portrayal was defined for a database filter layer during creation of the connection, the selected settings will be set in the Properties window. These settings can be changed if desired. A new portrayal can also be created and applied using the Style property. See Style for more information on this tool.

If a database layer is no longer needed, it can be removed from the database group using the Remove Layer command in the Layers window pop-up menu. This includes the Recycle Bin and Offline layers, which are different in the sense that they can be added back to the Layers window using the Add Layer command; database filter layers must be recreated if they are needed after they have been removed.
