The Breakline command lets you create a breakline for the TIN.

A breakline (brklne) is used to insert known elevations and depths into the TIN. A breakline represents a discontinuity of slope in a TIN. The slope of the surface changes abruptly at the breakline. For example, streams and ridges can be represented as breaklines on the TIN surface.

A breakline is distinguished by the fact that no triangle edges cross it. Triangles can only have their edges along the breakline.

Breakline objects can be lines or areas. Once a breakline is applied to the TIN, the model includes the vertices of the breakline and the value of their depth attribute.

Procedure

1. Make TIN Editor layer active and visible.

2. Select the Digitize Breakline command.

The Tool Depth dialog box is displayed.

3. Enter the depth for the breakline in the Depth field.

4. Click OK.

The cursor changes. You can now digitize the line.

The default line type is point to point, but you can select any other line type from the pop-up menu.

5. Click to place the first vertex of the line.

6. Continue adding vertices as needed.

When the line is complete, you can close it to create an area or end it to leave is as a line.

7. To create an area, right-click and select Close Line or press the <Home> key.

8. To end a line, right-click and select End Line or press the <End> key.

The breakline is created but is not yet applied to the TIN. You must use the Update TIN command to apply the breakline. When you do this, the TIN is updated based on the breakline.
