The Layers window lists all datasets, filtered layers, and external datasets that are open in the application. Many datasets have child layers, which could be usages, feature types, or other data, depending on the file type.

In the Layers window, you can do the following:
Command | Description |
|---|---|
Display/hide layer | 1. Click the check box beside the layer name. If the box has a check mark in it, the layer is visible in the Display window. If the box has a black square in it, at least one sub-layer of the layer is visible. |
Make a layer active | 1. Click or right-click on a layer. The active layer is highlighted. Right-clicking will also display a pop-up menu. You can edit features on the active layer in the Display window or customize the display of selected layers and groups in the Properties window. |
Search layers | Filter the layer names to find specific layers in large data sets with many layers. 1. Type text in the Search ( Any layers with names that match the text, in whole or in part, are listed and the matching text is highlighted. If the matching layer name is in a group, both the layer and the group it belongs to are displayed. If the matching name is a group name, all layers in the group and the group layer itself are displayed. 2. Click the x icon ( |
Change the draw order | Layers can be displayed as follows: • Top to bottom: The first layer in the list is drawn first. Every other layer is drawn on top of the previous layer. • Bottom to top: The layer at the bottom of the list is drawn first and each layer above it is drawn on top of the previous layer. You set your preferred method using Layer Draw Order in the Option command. You can fine-tune the draw order of your layers by selecting a layer and dragging it to a new position on the list. |
Organize data into groups | You can create a group then drag layers into it. This lets you, for example, to set common display properties for all layers in the group. The group layer itself is not drawn in the Display window, but layers in the group will be drawn. See Group Layers for details. |
Rename layers and groups | Double-click on the layer or group name or right-click and choose Rename from the pop-up menu. Type a new name and press <Enter> |
You can also customize the display of layers by setting the properties of the selected layer. See Properties window.
You can set the transparency of database area features and other S‑57 features (for example, ENC data files and HOB files) using the Options command.
When you right-click on a layer or group, the following pop-up menu is displayed

Some commands depend on the mode, level, or type of layer.
