The Determine Reference Features command is used to associate shoal boxes with the closest feature in a reference layer. Using features as a reference allows mariners to easily locate a nearby shoal by first locating the referenced feature. If a feature is within the shoal area, it will be chosen as the reference. If there is more than one feature within the shoal area, the object closest to the centre of the shoal will be chosen as the reference feature.
If the features with which you are planning to associate the shoal boxes are from an S-57 file, you should create a filtered layer before you use this command. For more information on creating a filter layer, see the “Create Layer By...” topics in the documentation.

Interface
The Determine Reference Features command uses the following dialog box.

Option | Description |
|---|---|
Layer | The layer from which to select a reference feature. All feature layers currently open in the application are listed as possible source layers. |
Identifiers | The attribute acronym of the reference features that will be used to identify which feature object a shoal box is using as a reference. The Point of reference (shlref) attribute of each shoal box will be populated with the attribute value for the selected attribute acronym from the feature to which the shoal was referenced. For example, with the options selected in the above dialog box, the shlref attribute for a shoal box would be populated with the Object Name (OBJNAM) of the feature object with which it is reference. The drop-down list is populated will all attribute acronyms present in the selected reference layer. |
