Depth Range Files

Depth range files are text files that set a range of depths for tiling and contouring data. These files are automatically generated during the contouring process.

The convention for setting depth values is similar to that of other CARIS files:

Drying heights above the datum are represented as negative values (negative up).

Depths below the datum are represented with positive values (positive down).

Below is an example of a range depth file. In this example the negative values (-30 to -5) are above the datum, and the positive values (5 to 50) are below the datum.

Z-axis convention

Some processes that use depth range files in HIPS do not follow the convention that depths are displayed in positive values (positive down).

These include:

Variable Resolution: the depth range file in HIPS and SIPS, CARIS Batch and Process Designer for the Variable Resolution process expects positive up (depths presented at negative values)

Contouring: uses a positive up depth range file, but when it loads the file into the dialog box it will display it according to the z-axis convention (positive down).
