Create New Alignment (Model window)

Digitize points for a new alignment. If multiple points are digitized to create the alignment, the result will be a compound alignment, comprised of individual alignments for each section between points.

Points used to define alignments must be in reference to the origin (i.e., ground units), not in reference to other alignments (i.e., chains and offsets).

Alignments can be created as straight lines or as curved lines.

A straight alignment is a straight line between two points.

A curved alignment uses 3 points to create an arced line in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction.

For more background information on alignments, see Alignments.

The example below depicts a compound alignment comprised of one straight alignment and two curved alignments for a total of four alignments.

Modify an Alignment

Procedure: Straight Alignment

1. Select the (New Feature, Alignment) By Digitizing command.

You are now in digitizing mode; note the change in the cursor.

To cancel creating an alignment and end the digitizing mode, press the <Esc> key twice.

2. Position the mouse pointer and click the mouse button to add the first point for the alignment.

Use snapping to create the alignment using existing point features. See Snapping for more information.

3. Position the mouse pointer in the location of the next point and click the mouse button again.

You now have a straight alignment. You can choose to stop digitizing now and complete the alignment, or you can continue to add points to create a compound alignment. The additional alignment sections can be as straight or curved.

4. To finish creating the alignment, right-click and select End from the pop-up menu.

Procedure: Curved Alignment

1. Select the (New Feature, Alignment) By Digitizing command.

You are now in digitizing mode, note the change in the cursor.

2. Position the mouse pointer and click to add the first end point for the arc.

3. Position the mouse pointer in the location of the second end point and click the mouse button again.

4. Right-click in the display and select the curve type (Curved CW for clockwise, Curved CCW for counter-clockwise).

5. Click and hold the mouse button to place the centre point of the arc.

6. Drag the point to the position that creates the desired arc size and release the mouse button.

You now have a curved alignment. You can choose to stop digitizing now and complete the alignment, or you can continue to add points to create a compound alignment. The additional alignment sections can be as straight or curved.

7. To finish creating the alignment, right-click and select End from the pop-up menu.
