Feature Editing : Introduction

Introduction

The CARIS1 Feature Editing module provides commands that are common to all CARIS applications and is enabled automatically when any licensed module is enabled. This module provides two sets of functionality, basic feature editing and advanced feature editing. The commands in each set are dependent on the licensed modules enabled in the application.

You can use the Feature Editing module to add individual features to an existing dataset. You can add features directly to some file types, such as CARIS maps, HOB files and database connection layers, but for other formats, you will have to add the features to a temporary layer then validate them and import them into the dataset.

Tools and menu items of the Feature Editing module may not appear, or may appear greyed out unless:

• The license for the Feature Editing module is activated.

• The Feature Editing module has been turned on.

• The application has been restarted after these changes were made.

See Modules for more information on enabling and disabling modules.

In general, you add a feature by selecting the Create command for the specific feature type then using one or more Digitize commands to create the spatial representation of the feature. Once created, the feature can be edited using one of the Edit commands.

Existing features can also be edited. Usually this would be done by copying them to a temporary layer, editing them there, then validating them and importing them back to the original dataset.

The feature types that can be added to a dataset depend on the format of the data and the catalogue being used to open it. The available types are:

2D and 3D points

2D and 3D lines

2D and 3D areas
