Mapping files convert features and attributes from one data format to another.
The files can also convert features and attributes within the same format and translate datums that are unknown to CARIS. For more information on mapping datums, see GDAL Datum Mapping.
There are two types of mapping files:
• Format files that map between chart formats (ENC, VPF, AML, and so on).
• Product files that map between specific formats (for example, CARIS or DGN files).
The following ready-made mapping files are located in ...\System\RuleFiles1.
Mapping File | Data Mapping |
aml10toaml21.xml | VPF AML data to S-57 AML data |
ih_f2o.xml | CARIS data to S-57 ENC data |
GMLToENC3_1.xml | Geographic Markup Language (GML) to ENC 3.1 |
DGNRuleFile.xml | DGN to S-57 3.1. |
The folder for mapping files that is used by CARIS is accessed from the Options dialog box.
Mapping is used with the following commands:
• Import Selected Objects
• Change All
• Export to HOB
• Export to GML
You can create custom mapping files but the files must follow the same structure and use the same functions and filters described in this guide. Meta data tags must be correctly populated so that the mapping file is listed in the appropriate dialog boxes.
1 Mapping files for converting VPF to S-57 are available by contacting CARIS.
