Who should use this guide?
This guide is intended for those users who need to understand or customize CARIS support files.
What is in this guide?
This guide explains the structure and syntax of the CARIS support files. These files can be modified to meet your needs or you can create your own. But the customized files must follow the same structure and use the same syntax as the files described in this document.
What is not in this guide?
Since standards, such as S-57 or S-100, are quite complex, no attempt is made to provide an overview of these standards. The guide does not include detailed information on the Extensible Markup Language (XML) syntax or structure.
Prerequisites?
This document assumes that you are comfortable with XML and hydrographic charting concepts. Additional experience with other CARIS products is also helpful.
How this guide is organized?
The document is organized as follows:
Chapter 1: CARIS Environment describes the directory structure of CARIS and how settings are saved.
Chapter 2: Coordinate Reference Systems describes the various files that are responsible for projection of data in application.
Chapter 3: Catalogues describes the structure of the dictionaries and profiles that make up product catalogues.
Chapter 4: Mapping Files describes the structure of the files used for mapping features.
Chapter 5: QC Files describes the structure of quality control files that used for validation.
Chapter 6: Filtering describes the filtering options that can used in the mapping and quality control files.
Chapter 7: Portrayals describes the portrayals used for chart presentation.
Chapter 8: Portrayal Files describes the files that make up different portrayals.
Chapter 9: Sounding Rounding describes the sounding rounding file and rules for sounding rounding.
Chapter 10: GDAL Datum Mapping describes some aspects of GDAL.
