The Layers window lists all datasets, filtered layers, and external datasets open in the application.
Most datasets have child layers. A CARIS file, for example, has separate layers for each feature type (polygons, lines, names, soundings, and symbols). Use the expand (+) and collapse (–) icons to show or hide the child layers.
If the check box beside a layer name contains a check mark, the layer is visible in the Display window. If it is empty, the layer is hidden from the display. When you change the visibility of a layer, refresh the display to see the change.
The active layer is the layer on which you can query and select features. Click on a layer name to make it active. The layer name is highlighted. Any layer can be the active layer.
A pop-up menu is displayed when you right-click on a layer name. The layer also becomes the active layer. The menu items available in the pop-up menu will differ depending on the level and type of layer selected. The following are the common menu items that are available for most layers:
• Create Layer: Create a filtered layer.
• Set as Snap/Grab Target: Makes the selected layer the one you will snap to if using the Snap or Grab command.
• Use Coordinate Reference System: Apply the coordinate reference system of one layer to all open layers.
• Zoom to Map: Zoom to the extent of the selected layer.
• Close: Close the selected dataset.
